The basis of a rational-moral component in Karamzin’s views directed to the creation of the “common good” society is formed by the ideas of an accessible public education for all estates, Christian faith, and a virtuous Monarch beloved by his people. The author proves that the idea of creating a fair state while keeping monarchy, social estates and serfdom contradicts the idea of freedom and progress. The article’s task is to clarify the role that Karamzin’s ideas performed in the development of the Russian philosophical thought. The analysis has revealed that morality, or “soul power”, can be considered as a means of cognition following the Russian literary and philosophical tradition.
Keywords: personality; freedom; public education; morality; faith; governance; state.
