The historical conditions of formation and the content of the concepts of creativity by pioneers of philosophical thought’s main currents — Democritus and Plato — are discussed. The analysis of these concepts identifi ed universal basis of creativity, and thus its nature, essence and the main characteristics of creative activity. A system of contradictions of creative activity, identifi ed by the great philosophers, and a way to resolve these contradictions proposed by them, were shown.
