The purpose of the author’s study is to define Buddhist stupas as a visual symbol of the philosophy of Northern Buddhism. The article highlights the history of the appearance of stupas, types of stupas, the symbolism of their components in a philosophical context, rituals associated with the construction and functionality of stupas. It is confirmed that there is a philosophical component in the semantics of stupas. It has been concluded that Buddhist stupas are a unique visual symbol of the philosophical ideas of Northern Buddhism. The data obtained in the course of the study have been successfully applied in pedagogical practice in the subjects: philosophy, religious studies, cultural studies, art history on the basis of the Buryat State University.
