The authors discuss the question of improvement of students’ independent work on disciplines of the higher mathematics. They state that in the conditions of competence-based approach it is necessary to make changes in technology of training, including a planning and realization of extracurricular work, because inclusion of the tasks with realization in packages of applied computer programs promotes increase of students’ motivation, interest, and formation of necessary common cultural and professional competences. They propose a task for first-year students on creation of function graph in polar coordinate system and parametric function with use of MATLAB package.
