The author discusses the phenomenon of religion in the context of culture’s ideal forms movement in the historical process. The methodological basis of religion’s analysis is the outstanding Soviet philosopher E. V. Ilyenkov’s concept of ideal. The culture self-consciousness’ ideal forms (including religion) are considered as human way of life’s essential components, expressing and serving its historical stages. It is stated that religion in this development process is a necessary but illusory and historically transient form of consciousness.
