The author explains the basic attributes of the cognitive process in the framework of Cartesian and Christian philosophy. Cartesian division of human being in two substances, one of which is passive in the cognitive process, is demonstrated. The author explores the epistemological determinants of Christian philosophy as exemplified by the hesychasm phenomenon, and explores the synergetic interactions that occur in practice of Christian hesychasm. Finally the author shows fundamental differences between Cartesian and Christian types of cognitive process as well as Christian and classic European anthropology.
Keywords: epistemology; anthropology; Descartes; Christianity; hesychasm; synergetic interaction.
