The author places emphasis upon epoch-making significance of 17th century for history of philosophy and for scientific thought. He gives short curriculum vitae and detailed analysis of philosophical beliefs of John Locke, English enlightener and founder of materialistic sensationalism. The author did check Locke’s key epistemological propositions against R. Descartes’ doctrine of knowledge nature and sources, marking the continuity in English thinker’s views and fundamental differences between them and Descartes’ concept. The author has affirmed the continued importance of Locke’s idea of exploratory activity’s epistemological basics.
