The role of innovations in the market economy as an effective means of the competition is noted. The
definitions of invention, novelty and innovation are considered in the context of the market economy. The
necessity of innovations for the development of competitive products with high degree of research intensity
and originality is stressed out. The importance of terminology disambiguation for this process appreciation is
affirmed. A cumulative classification of innovations by a range of the characteristics is presented. A mechanism for the development of a marketing program product innovation is provided.
