The author discusses the current state of knowledge of social functions of music, identifies the foundations of the study of the social functions of music in the Marxist and neo-Marxist (Frankfurt) schools. He shows that contemporary philosophy of art is beyond the limits set by these schools and that fact allows highlighting new features of music, such as settings of the mass consciousness, the production of the author’s world, social regulation of time and space, and so on.
